Default do an exam, take an exam, pass an exam

    Hi friends,

Could you please explain the difference in meanings of these collocations:
"do an exam", "take an exam" and pass an exam". Do they mean the same?

    Thank you very much,
    Nataly

-- "Do an exam" does not sound natural to me.
-- "Take an exam" means to answer the questions on the exam and turn in your answers.
-- "Pass an exam" presumes that you take the exam, but additionally you achieve a passing score on the exam.

Occasionally I have heard the term "sit for an exam" meaning the same thing as "take an exam".

To take an exam and not receive a passing grade on it is to "fail an exam". A slang term that means the same thing is "flunk an exam".

A slang term that means to pass an exam with a grade of "A" (the highest possible grade) is "ace an exam".

    Examples:
    1) These students are from foreign countries. You should do an exam for them to determine which classes they would fit in. ( do an exam= formulate/prepare a test/tests)
    2) You would be required to do an exam/sit for an exam/take an exam before being considered for acceptance to this college. ( here, "do an exam" = "sit for an exam"= "take an exam")
    3) You have to pass an exam before your application for acceptance to this college will be considered. ( means that you should get passing marks in the exams before your application is considered)
